Newswise — Officials from the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology are pleased to announce the results of the recent election for the open positions within the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee.

"With the election of Council Chairs and additional Nominating Committee members, we have taken a major step in implementing our new governance structure and have made our organization even stronger to accomplish our goals of improving cancer care through education and research. "

The new officers for 2004 include:

·President-Elect: Prabhakar Tripuraneni, M.D., Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, Calif.Dr. Tripuraneni is currently the head of Radiation Oncology and an Associate Director of Green Cancer Center of Scripps Clinic. He has been active in ASTRO since 1982 serving on numerous committees and task forces and is currently the Senior Editor of ASTROnews and Chair of the Information Technology and Resource Development committee.

·Treasurer: Leonard L. Gunderson, M.D., Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, Ariz.Dr. Gunderson is the Chair of Radiation Oncology and Deputy Director of Clinical Affairs at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. He has been active with ASTRO since 1976 and has served on the Constitution and Bylaws Committee. ·Council Chairs:

Healthcare Economics Council Chair: Michael Steinberg, M.D., Santa Monica Cancer Treatment Center, Santa Monica, Calif.A Professor of Clinical Oncology at UCLA and in private practice, Dr. Steinberg has been active in ASTRO since 1981. He is currently the Co-chair of the Joint Economics Committee and the Clinical Practice Committee.

Government Relations Council Chair: George E. Laramore, M.D., Ph.D., University of Washington, Seattle.Dr. Laramore is on the staff at both the University of Washington and at numerous hospitals throughout Seattle. He has been active in ASTRO since 1982 and is currently a member of the Government Relations Committee.

Education Council Chair: Bruce D. Minsky, M.D., Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York.Dr. Minsky is the Vice-chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a Professor of Radiation Oncology at Cornell University in New York City. He has been active in ASTRO since 1988 and has been very involved in educational aspects of the Society.

Research Council Chair: Randall K. Ten Haken, Ph.D., University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, Mich.Dr. Ten Haken is a Professor of Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan. He has been active in ASTRO since 1985 and is the current Chair of the Radiation Physics Committee.

·Nominating Committee:

Richard T. Hoppe, M.D., Stanford University, Stanford, Calif.Dr. Hoppe is the Henry S. Kaplan-Harry Lebeson Professor of Cancer Biology and Chair in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Stanford University in Stanford, Calif. He has been active in ASTRO since 1972, is a Past President of the Society.

Ivy A. Peterson, M.D., Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.Dr. Peterson is an Assistant Professor at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn. She has been active in ASTRO since 1993.

Christopher M. Rose, M.D., Valley Radiotherapy Associates, Los Angeles, Calif Dr. Rose is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California in Los Angeles and in private practice as Director of Clinical Programs at Vantage Oncology, Inc. He has been active in ASTRO since 1978, is Past President of the Society and is a member of the History Committee.

David C. Beyer, M.D., Arizona Oncology Services, Scottsdale, Ariz.Dr. Beyer is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., and is affiliated with numerous hospitals in the Phoenix metropolitan area. He has been active in ASTRO since 1985 and is the Chair of the Code Utilization and Application Committee and a member of the Joint Economics Committee.

Mark W. Dewhirst, D.V.M., Ph.D., Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.Dr. Dewhirst is the Gustavo Montana Professor of Radiation Oncology at Duke University in Durham, N.C. He has been active in ASTRO since 1985 and is a former member of the Board of Directors.

C. Clifton Ling, Ph.D., Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York.Dr. Ling is the Enid Haupt Chair of the Department of Medical Physics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a Professor of Radiology Physics at Cornell University Medical College in New York. He has been active in ASTRO since 1979.

These new officers will begin their terms during ASTRO's 45th Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah, to be held October 19-23, 2003.
