Newswise — NORTHFIELD, ILL. — The College of American Pathologists (CAP) was recognized by the Association for Talent Development (ATD), formerly ASTD, with an Excellence in Practice Award for its Laboratory Medical Director (LMD) Advanced Practical Pathology Program (AP3) in the Organizational Learning and Development category.

ATD’s Excellence in Practice program recognizes organizations for results achieved through the use of practices and solutions from the entire scope of talent development. Awards are presented to organizations with proven practices that have delivered measurable business results in achieving organizational goals. Citations are presented to organizations with promising practices that have shown they will demonstrate measurable results.

“Helping pathologists be effective leaders in an evolving health care landscape is critical to patient care and the specialty of pathology,” said CAP President Gene N. Herbek, MD, FCAP. “Through collaboration with multiple experts, the CAP developed the Laboratory Medical Director Advanced Practical Pathology Program to provide pathologists with the knowledge and critical skills they need to be successful.”

The CAP’s LMD AP3 is a blended program that combines the following: seven online learning activities; a 1.5 day workshop facilitated by recognized experts in the field; a 50-item, multiple-choice, proctored cognitive assessment; and a practical assessment demonstrating their knowledge and skills. The design of the program took into consideration how practitioners wanted to learn and the flexibility they needed.

ATD received 126 submissions in the fall of 2014 from organizations around the world. Thirteen organizations received awards and 30 were recognized with citations. Excellence in Practice categories include: career development, coaching and mentoring, diversity and inclusion, facilitating organizational change, integrated talent management, learning technologies, managing the learning function, organizational learning and development, performance improvement, and sales enablement.

The CAP, along with other award and citation recipients, was honored on May 18 at an awards ceremony held during ATD’s International Conference & Exposition in Orlando, Florida. Visit www.td.org for more information about the conference and awards programs.
