Newswise — Babson College Professor of History and Foodways Frederick Douglass Opie has authored the new book, Zora Neale Hurston on Florida Food: Recipes, Remedies & Simple Pleasures.

His book reflects on Floridian food traditions as detailed in Hurston’s ethnographic research and writing. Hurston is one of the pre-eminent writers of 20th Century African-American literature.

Opie highlights the essentials of food in Florida through simple dishes and recipes. He considers foods prepared for everyday meals, as well as special occasions, and looks at what shaped eating traditions in early 20th Century Florida.

He credits Hurston with doing for Florida what William Faulkner did for Mississippi -- both authors provided insight into a state’s history and culture through various styles of writing and contributed to a larger southern canon.

Zora Neale Hurston on Florida Food is essential reading for those who love history, cooking and eating. Visit http://bit.ly/1as7Xaa
