"Black Political Issues Forum 2000" to Be Held at Swarthmore College

Some of the nation's most prominent African American political leaders and policy experts will speak at the "Black Political Issues Forum 2000" to be held at Swarthmore College on Friday, Feb. 4. The forum, which will be held in Lang Concert Hall from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. is free and open to the public.

Forum panelists include Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus; Rep. Chakah Fattah (D-PA); Reform Party advocate Lenora Fulani; and Roderick Harrison of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Invited panelists are Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) and Republican presidential candidate Alan Keyes. The panel will be moderated by Keith Reeves, associate professor of political science, Swarthmore College.

The "Black Political Issues Forum 2000" is designed to provide a national platform for these leaders to discuss a breadth of political, social, and economic policy issues that are expected to substantially affect this country and its African American citizens in the 21st century. The issues include black leadership in the House, education policy, democracy and the digital divide, the 2000 census and representative government, coalition politics, and the importance of the black vote in the 2000 elections.

The "Black Political Issues Forum 2000" is sponsored by the Black Cultural Center, the Swarthmore African American Student Society, the Swarthmore Colllege Democrats, and the Swarthmore College Republicans.
