WHAT: The eighth annual UCLA AIDS Institute Scientific Symposium, themed Global Challenges, will bring together more than 350 leaders in research, science and industry to share the latest advances against AIDS.

WHO: Dr. Helene Gayle, director of the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) National Center for HIV, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Tuberculosis Prevention, will deliver the keynote address on The Global AIDS Epidemic. Since 1995, Gayle has supervised 1,200 staff, including 500 employees worldwide, who collaborate with national and international partners to prevent and eradicate AIDS. Both a pediatrician and epidemiologist, Gayle has headed the HIV/AIDS division for the U.S. Agency for International Development; worked in Africa, Asia and the Americas; and consulted with the World Health Organization and United Nations.

Dr. Donald Francis, president of the HIV-vaccine firm, VaxGen, Inc., outspoken public-health advocate and former CDC scientist featured in the film, And the Band Played On, will address Challenges of Vaccine Development at 9:15 a.m.

Assemblywoman Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, 49th District, will be honored at 12:15 p.m. for her efforts in HIV/AIDS research, education and prevention.

WHY: The symposium will emphasize how local breakthroughs in clinical, behavioral and basic science research can help the global AIDS community.

WHEN: Morning presentations: 8:30 -- 10:45 a.m.
Clinical and behavioral research sessions: 11 a.m. -- noon
Keynote address: 12:15 -- 1:30 p.m.
Basic science sessions: 3:45 -- 5 p.m.

MEDIA: A reporter Q&A session with Gayle will occur from 10-11 a.m. at Korn Hall.
