Newswise — WASHINGTON - The office building at 10 G Street, N.E., has achieved LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, according to the American Psychological Association, which owns the property.

“Earning this important certification demonstrates APA’s commitment to sustainability and to being a part of our nation’s clean energy transition,” said Archie L. Turner, APA’s chief operating and chief financial officer. “10 G achieved LEED Gold Certification in 2011 and continued to make performance improvements.”

The building, which is managed by Cushman & Wakefield, is the 17th in the District of Columbia to achieve this status, making it among the “greenest” in Washington.

10 G Street, N.E., is a 258,000-square foot Class A office building located steps away from Union Station in the NoMa neighborhood. Its tenants include the World Resources Institute and Amtrak. 10G is also home to the nation's first urban green roof and labyrinth, installed in summer 2008 and adjacent to an existing terrace on the roof. Small plants called sedum and the labyrinth—an ancient tool for meditation that has in recent years seen a resurgence in popularity—cover 3,600 square feet of the building's roof.

LEED (which stands for Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design) is a certification program and globally recognized benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2000 through a consensus process, LEED serves as a market-driven tool and third-party verified standard of sustainable design and operation across the entire building lifecycle.

The American Psychological Association’s headquarters building at 750 First St., N.E. – a block from 10 G – has been LEED Gold Certified since 2013. The association and Cushman & Wakefield are working toward achieving platinum status for the headquarters building, Turner said.

The American Psychological Association, in Washington, D.C., is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States. APA's membership includes more than 117,500 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial associations, APA works to advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people's lives.
