Newswise — "Kids E.N.T. Health," a national public information campaign to inform the public about pediatric ear, nose, and throat disorders, will be observed in February, 2004. This initiative, launched for the first time in 2003 by the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), seeks to advise parents and caregivers that ear, nose, and throat disorders remain among the primary reasons children and adolescents visit a physician.

Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons (more commonly referred to as ear, nose, and throat specialists) have long established through patient care and research that such pediatric medical disorders as tonsillitis and enlarged tonsils, ear infections, sinusitis and allergies, can, if untreated, lead to long-term adverse consequences. These may include hearing loss, obstructive sleep apnea, and severe upper respiratory disorders. Accordingly, members of this surgical and medical specialty have designed February as "Kids E.N.T. Health" month. With the support of a grant from Pfizer, Inc., and UCB Pharma, this educational initiative will offer new health information to pediatricians, family practice physicians, and the public.

New campaign information is available online at http://www.entnet.org/kidsent/. Joining this comprehensive Internet library of pediatric ear, nose, and throat health information are:

"¢ Referral guidelines established by AAO-HNS physician-specialists delineating the proper diagnosis and treatment of the most common ear, nose, and throat disorders."¢ New patient fact sheets addressing ear, nose, and throat disorders related to childhood obesity, pediatric GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)/LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux), facial trauma, foreign bodies, and pediatric allergies."¢ A video news release, addressing pediatric allergies, that will be released to nationwide television stations in early February.

Some of the nation's leading authorities in the diagnosis and treatment of children's ear, nose, and throat disorders will be scheduled to speak to medical and healthcare reporters regarding Kids E.N.T. Health.
