Newswise — At a time of economic crisis, when consumers and industrial managers all seek the best possible prices for basic commodities—water, telecommunications, electricity, postal and other services—Frank Wolak, professor of commodity price studies at Stanford University, will address the UC San Diego Economics Roundtable on October 14, placing these demands into perspective with claims of the environment.

Wolak's current research includes methods for introducing competition into infrastructure industries and accessing the impacts of these competition policies on the welfare of consumers and producers.

Wolak is chair of the Market Surveillance Committee of the California Independent System Operator for the electricity supply industry in California. He received his B.A. from Rice University and his Ph.D from Harvard University.

Wolak will address the Roundtable on "Balancing California's Energy Needs with its Environmental Goals." The event, to be held at the Faculty Club on the UCSD campus, will begin with a continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m and the public is invited. The fee of $50 per person includes breakfast and parking.
