Newswise — The Endocrine Society has named Charles E. Blue director of communications, effective October 3, 2006. With more than 15 years of experience in media relations and science communications, Blue will support the Society's mission of advancing research on hormones and the clinical practice of endocrinology.

This position also will support the patient education programs of The Hormone Foundation, the public education affiliate of The Endocrine Society.

Most recently, Blue served as the science writer/editor for the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Directorate for Engineering where he provided expert counsel on the directorate's outreach activities, including strategic planning and program management. Prior to this, he was the public information officer for the NSF's National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville, Va. While there, he worked with internationally recognized scientists to communicate the research results from the Green Bank Telescope—the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope.

Blue also served as the director of communications for the American Association of Engineering Societies, public information officer for the National Academy of Engineering, and public information coordinator for the American Geophysical Union.

Blue received his bachelor's degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., and his master's degree from American University in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the National Association of Science Writers, and has received the NRAO Star Award and the NSF Director's Award for Excellence.
