Land is lot like a person. Just because it's pretty on the surface doesn't mean everything is fine underneath. Many homes and businesses throughout the country are built on limestone and sandstone. Over time, these rocks can erode and sinkholes can form. UAB geology professor Scott Brande, Ph.D. advises consumers purchasing property to get expert advice before buying. "The average homeowner can't tell if there's a possible sinkhole problem. To be safe, hire a geologist to evaluate the property. Also, check a state's geological survey office for information on the area." If a problem is found, Brande says, it might prevent development. Many states have regulations preventing septic systems from being installed near sinkholes because of the potential for groundwater pollution.
