Newswise — A team of students from the Colorado School of Mines was crowned the TMS 2009 Alcoa Materials Bowl Tournament champion at The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) Annual Meeting & Exhibition held recently in San Francisco.

Colorado School of Mines team members Greg Lehnhoff, Collin Trickel, Joshua Jackson, and Erik Pfeif edged out Boise State University on the final question to win the tournament and capture the school's first-ever Materials Bowl trophy.

The team earned the traveling trophy after three rounds of intense, materials science-based questions. Trickel said his team prepared for the contest by studying and reading JOM, the Society's member journal.

"We exhausted all resources in preparing for the tournament," he said.

Students answered questions about Materials & Society; Name the Primary Constituent; TMS and JOM; Potpourri; A Word from Our Sponsor; and Recycle Bin. To engage the spectators, teams also received a "life-line" that allowed them to "Ask the Audience."

In addition to Colorado School of Mines and Boise State, other competing teams represented Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Alabama, the University of California-Irvine, the University of Alberta, Missouri University of Science and Technology, the University of Utah, Florida International University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Tennessee the reigning champions.
