Combat the Causes of Terrorism

The U.S. war on terrorism will be carried out through retaliatory military strikes and diplomatic channels. But UAB political scientist Nikolaos Zahariadis, Ph.D., says while military strikes will help in the short run, to combat terrorism effectively, America must focus on terrorism's root causes: religious fundamentalism and poverty. "You combat religious fundamentalism by encouraging democratic participation, in addition to economic development. Religious fundamentalism is the outcome of seeking to impose some meaning into your life and your future under incredible change and when public participation and deliberation aren't available. By going after poverty, we give people a stake in the future."
