Consequences of Toy Mania

Many parents are enduring long store lines and high prices to buy Pokemon and other popular toys. "But when a child sees his parent going to extraordinary means to get something he wants, he can take it in at least two ways," says UAB child psychologist Vivian Friedman, Ph.D.

"The satisfied child whose parent meets all of his needs, but few of his wants will appreciate his parent making the effort. The spoiled child who has too many things and not enough love and limits will expect his parent to make extraordinary efforts to please him, but will think little of the effort or the gift. He'll assume it's his parent's job to get what he wants."
