Newswise — Steven and Alexandra Cohen and other supporters of the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York recently broke ground on a $120 million, 100,000-square-foot pavilion that will further enhance the hospital’s national reputation for excellence in pediatric healthcare.
“The need for specialized pediatric services has grown tremendously,” said Arthur Klein, MD, senior vice president of children’s services at the North Shore-LIJ Health System, and executive director and chief of staff at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York. “This new pavilion, made possible by the Cohens’ extraordinary generosity, will enable us to continue to be a truly world-class children’s hospital unmatched in the New York area.”
The new six-story building will feature:• A Pediatric Emergency Center — the region’s first dedicated, stand-alone pediatric emergency department. The center will be specially equipped to handle the needs of pediatric patients, from advanced, child-sized medical equipment to family-friendly waiting rooms. In addition, world-class emergency care pediatricians will staff the Emergency Department, supported by pediatric specialists in all areas of medicine.
• A Pediatric Medical/Surgical Unit that will include 25 private rooms with personal bathrooms. Patient rooms will also have a designated sleeping area for family, and the unit will provide family shower facilities, wireless Internet, a special waiting room and other family-focused amenities.
• A 25-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with a private hospital entrance. Patients transferred to CCMC from other facilities can be brought directly to the PICU, bypassing the emergency center.
• A Pediatric Surgery Center with dedicated, state-of-the-art pediatric operating rooms to serve a wide range of surgical needs. The center will also include child-friendly pre- and post-operating rooms. In addition, a real-time tracking system will keep families updated on their child’s status at all times.
“The Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York encourages the support and involvement of our patients’ families. That’s why in every step of the planning process we’ve designed spaces with them in mind,” said Dr. Klein.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2012. The expansion project is being supported, in part, by a $50 million gift from the Cohen Foundation. In March, the 152-bed hospital – formerly known as Schneider Children’s Hospital – was renamed in the Cohens’ honor.
“This major undertaking will further elevate the stature of the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York — already recognized by US News and World Report as one of the best in the country — and strengthen our ability to recruit the best and brightest pediatric specialists,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
“Thanks to Steven and Alexandra Cohen, we’re now writing another exciting chapter in the history of this hospital,” added Saul Katz, the health system’s chairman. “And as good as this hospital already is, we feel a great sense of pride in knowing the future holds even greater things for our children and our children’s children.”
