Courting the Gun Control Vote

The National Rifle Association recently spent nearly $1 million in key battleground states to support presidential candidate George W. Bush, who calls for enforcing current gun laws instead of new gun control legislation.

The gun control issue often pits Republicans against women voters, who generally view gun control as a safety issue, says UAB pollster Larry Powell, Ph.D. Some news accounts report Vice President Al Gore has toned down his gun control rhetoric, saying in a debate only that he would not take guns away from law-abiding citizens.

"Gore is trying not to lose the hunters while winning the soccer moms. He's being a little bit too cautious on that, since he's not going to get most of the hunters anyway and he badly needs the soccer moms' vote."
