When buying a computer beware of bundled packages from big retailers and Web shops, says Jim McDade, director of information technology in the UAB School of Business. "It's like buying a suit, do you want something off the rack or do you want something specifically tailored to your needs?" He suggests buying from a local shop that will put together specifically what you need instead of the bargain of the month package at a large retailer or Web store. "While you may spend a little more, you generally get a lot more, especially in terms of follow-up service and support." Check the warranty to make sure it is 2-3 years and that the first year includes parts and labor. Also, some companies won't honor warranties if you replace parts yourself, even if they have assured you it's OK to do "self-service".
