Newswise — The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) continues to support its growth in emerging technologies with the hiring of esteemed materials scientist Dr. George Spanos as Technical Director.

Spanos most recently served as section head in the Materials Science Division of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., prior to joining the TMS staff at the headquarters office near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He will assume his new post on June 1.

TMS Executive Director Warren H. Hunt Jr. acknowledged the significance of Spanos’ anticipated contributions to the society in his new staff position. He said Spanos’ technical strengths are well aligned with key growth areas targeted by the TMS Board of Directors, especially in the areas of Micro- and Nanostructure Processing and Property Relationships, and Integrated Computational Materials Science and Engineering.

“TMS is at an important stage in our strategic growth process and Dr. Spanos will add strong technical leadership to our staff. He is highly respected in the field and brings with him great technical credentials, along with excellent communications skills, which will mesh well with the TMS culture of professionalism and teamwork,” Hunt said.

Spanos earned his undergraduate, master’s and doctorate degrees in metallurgical engineering and materials science from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

During his distinguished career to date, Spanos has attained numerous professional awards. His most recent professional accolade was receiving the Naval Research Laboratory 2009 Commanding Officer’s Award for Achievement in the Field of Equal Employment Opportunity. Inducted as an ASM International Fellow in 2004, Spanos has authored or co-authored 89 technical publications which have received 1,490 citations, and he has made 134 professional presentations. He has also received two Technology Transfer Awards while at the Naval Research Laboratory.

Spanos has been a TMS member for 28 years, actively serving in many volunteer capacities. He currently serves on the TMS Awards Committee, the newly established Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) Committee and the ASM/TMS Phase Transformations Committee, where he also held office as a past chairman. Additionally, he served as vice chairman of the TMS Public & Governmental Affairs Committee from 2005–2008.

“I am very excited about joining the TMS staff as Technical Director, and making a strong contribution to the vision and growth of TMS. It is an organization that I have been strongly involved with for my entire career, in both a volunteer capacity and as a member who has reaped great benefits for almost 30 years now, and it will be an honor to serve the materials community full time through this new endeavor,” he said.

About TMSTMS is the professional organization encompassing the entire range of materials science and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators and administrators from more than 70 countries on six continents.
