Newswise — If you are looking for an expert to discuss the earthquake that hit the East Coast this week, try Greg Waite, PhD, Assistant Professor, Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences at Michigan Technological University

Most recently, Greg Waite has researched the mini-earthquakes in Chile that he believes caused the recent volcanic eruptions there. The Associated Press did a story on his work, and the National Science Foundation has supported and reported on this research.

Waite has worked with local and regional media on stories about earthquakes and volcanoes in Guatemala and hazard mitigation as it related to the recent earthquake in Haiti. He is also involved in research using underground seismographic equipment, part of the NSF's USArray Earthscope Project.

From his research website:Greg Waite uses seismology to study the Earth over a range of scales from the crust to the upper mantle. His research integrates seismology with other geophysical and geological techniques to develop models for active processes in the crust and upper mantle. Some examples of current and past research areas are:

* seismic source mechanisms of tectonic and volcanic earthquakes; * mantle and crustal-scale seismic tomography; * the relationship of seismic anisotropy to fluids and strain; * active-source investigations of magmatic systems; * triggering of earthquakes by magmatic and hydrous fluid migration; * relationship between shallow syneruptive volcanic earthquakes and degassing
