Most people think of reading when they hear the word literacy, but according to Henry McCarl, Ph.D., director of the UAB Center for Economic Education, they should also think economics.

"Economic literacy is essential to people making sound financial decisions. People need to understand the basic economic principles such as supply and demand and the role profits play in the economy. We also need to help people understand that business is not some evil entity -- we all have to work for the things we want in life."

The center is one of six in the country and helps develop curriculums for teachers. It recently received full affiliation status by the National Council on Economic Education.
