LOS ANGELES (April 23, 2002) -- An educational conference focusing on treating children with spinal disorders will be presented by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute and by the Cedars-Sinai Department of Pediatrics on Saturday, June 8, 2002. The all-day conference is open to pediatricians, as well as pediatric neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons and radiologists, and to registered nurses in these specialties. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, and the conference will conclude at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be served.

The course will focus on evaluating and treating childhood spinal disorders including congenital neurosurgical and orthopedic malformations, spinal deformities, spina bifida, infections and traumatic abnormalities. There will be special presentations on scoliosis, tethered cords, spinal trauma, Chiari and Syrinx, neurological problems in children with dwarfing conditions and more.

According to conference co-directors, Moise Danielpour, M.D. and Robert M. Bernstein, M.D., the disorders to be discussed at this conference afflict millions of children worldwide and are a common cause of concern for parents and primary care physicians, alike. The goal in presenting this conference is to provide valuable information that addresses those important medical concerns.

The conference is designed to provide information that will enable participants to:* Accurately evaluate children with spinal pathology* Discuss the natural history and treatment options for tethered cord and other spinal deformities* Identify children who need to be referred to a specialist, and * Identify dwarfing conditions with abnormalities of the cervical spine.

Responding to a growing need in the greater Los Angeles area for highly specialized care of children with spinal disorders, pediatric brain tumors and other central nervous system disorders, the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute and the Cedars-Sinai Department of Pediatrics have established state-of-the-art and comprehensive programs for pediatric neurosurgery and pediatric orthopedic surgery with an emphasis on childhood spinal pathology. The multi-disciplinary programs are led by Dr. Danielpour, director of pediatric neurosurgery, and by Dr. Bernstein, director of pediatric orthopedic surgery.
