Newswise — The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) will hold its 55th annual meeting in Providence, Rhode Island, from September 17-20, 2008, at the Rhode Island Convention Center. Over 1000 physicians are expected to attend the meeting, which will include world-renowned leaders in the field of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and electrodiagnostic medicine who will come together to hear the latest research related to the treatment and diagnosis of muscle and nerve disorders.

The plenary session for the meeting features medical experts on the subject of motor neuron disease where the biology, genetics, neurophysiology, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) will be presented. Other educational highlights will include a symposium on the novel syndrome recently identified in pork processors and the key findings in this unique autoimmune disorder. Neuromuscular Update Courses will cover topics such as approaches to gene replacement for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and experimental strategies for the treatment of myasthenia gravis. Medical residents and physicians in training will have the opportunity to attend Future Steps, an innovative program specifically tailored to residents who are looking to make the most of their practice opportunities and choices. These sessions are just some of over 80 educational sessions offered throughout the 4-day meeting.
