NEW YORK, Jan. 21, 1998 -- The National Research Investment Act of 1998, calling for a major increase in federal spending of research and development via innovation and consensus, highlights the agenda of Engineering Expo ë98 in Jackson, Miss.

Senator Trent Lott will give the inaugural address at the exposition on Jan. 22. Engineering Expo ë98 will commence on Jan 21 and continue to Jan. 23 at Mississippi Trade Mart, Jackson. It is presented by the Mississippi Section of ASME International (American Society of Mechanical Engineers).

The 125,000-member ASME strongly endorses the National Research Investment Act which stipulates a 100 percent increase in federally sponsored R&D programs over the next ten years. The Society believes that government support of technology will foster new jobs and ensure the health of Americaís engineering and technology infrastructure.

ìAs we approach the 21st century, technology development will be a critical component of the nationís efforts to maintain global competitiveness, as well as improve the standard of living for all Americans,î said Keith B. Thayer, president of ASME and speaker at Engineering Expo.

Other public-policy issues that will be discussed at the exposition include the creation of a bioengineering research center at the National Institutes of Health and the application of technology to control the emissions of damaging greenhouse gases.

More than 40 companies, universities, government agencies and associations are participating in Engineering Expo ë98, reflecting the synergy that will be required to initiate new ideas and concepts for technology innovation. Participants are drawn primarily from Louisiana and Mississippi and include Westinghouse, Entergy Corp., Malcolm Pirnie and Mississippi State University.

Engineering Expo ë98 also includes technical seminars, an awards presentation and student competition.

ASME International is focused on technical, educational and research issues. It conducts one of the worldís largest technical publishing operations, holds some 30 technical conferences and 200 professional development courses each year and sets many industrial and manufacturing standards.
