Newswise — The International Epilepsy Program at NYU Medical Center will conduct its first International Latin-American Neurosciences Symposium September 13th and 14th. Under the direction of Dr. Blanca Vasquez, Director of Clinical Research, and Dr. Ruben Kuzniecky, Co-Director of the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, the conference will address the most advanced treatments for neurological disorders including epilepsy in children and adults, multiple sclerosis, brain tumor management, sleep disorders, vascular disorders, and women with epilepsy.

NYU's neurological specialists have an established history of collaboration with physicians in Latin America to provide state-of-the-art treatment options for their patients with neurological disorders. It is expected that the interaction and collaboration with the Latin American physicians will garner knowledge to improve prevention and treatment of neurological disease in the Latin American community. Internationally-renowned panelists will discuss the latest information on neurogenetics, neuro-metabolic disorders, surgical treatment of epilepsy, surgical management of brain tumors, new anti-convulsant drugs, neuro-endovascular treatment, cognition and epilepsy, and imaging in epilepsy.

NYU's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is the largest epilepsy program in the Eastern United States and has a distinguished history of service to patients from all over the world. It offers testing, evaluation, screening, medical and surgical treatment, clinical drug trials, and alternative therapies to children, adolescents, and adults with all forms of epilepsy through inpatient and outpatient programs. Each year, more than 5,500 patients are treated.

The symposium is being conducted collaboratively with NYU Medical Center's International Services Program which facilitates physician consultations worldwide and assists patients from other countries access care at NYU. An educational grant is being provided by UCB Pharma for the symposium.
