February Is Black History Month

Black History Month is a time to recognize the achievements and contributions of African-Americans. However, many children know little about the many notable black Americans or about African culture, says Virginia Whatley Smith, Ph.D., UAB associate professor of African-American literature. "Children from all races need to learn about other cultures, including black history. It's important that different cultural voices are woven into school curriculums." Suggestions for school and family activities: present Afro-centric literature to children; tour exhibitions that highlight the lives of African-Americans: make an Afro-centric meal.
