Newswise — DALLAS – The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) has released its 2013 Annual Report, titled “The Future is Here,” highlighting progress the FSMB has made over the last year on a number of its key initiatives.

Included in the 2013 report are updates on the FSMB’s advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C.; recent expansions of its data-gathering and data-processing capabilities; its new and improved educational outreach; and special projects from the FSMB Foundation. The report also highlights the achievements of various state medical boards over the last year in a special section titled “State Innovations.”

“The past year has been an important one in the FSMB’s history,” said CEO and President Humayun J. Chaudhry, DO, MACP. “We observed our 100th anniversary as an organization and moved forward on many new initiatives designed to usher in a new era of medical regulation in the United States. Our annual report theme, ‘The Future is Here,’ captures the spirit of momentum we feel as we begin a new century of service.”

Among many highlights, the report provides updates on:

• The FSMB’s advocacy for more streamlined licensing for physicians, including a major new initiative to explore expedited interstate licensure through the use of an interstate compact.

• The Maintenance of Licensure (MOL) initiative, which seeks to strengthen the effectiveness of lifelong learning programs for physicians, and on FSMB’s efforts to address the problem of opioid abuse and misuse through better physician education.

• Efforts by the FSMB to expand and improve U.S. physician workforce data, including administration and distribution of its second comprehensive Census of U.S. Physicians.

• New educational outreach efforts, including improvements to its scholarly publication, the Journal of Medical Regulation, and a wide variety of guidelines and recommendations – ranging from the use of social media by physicians to best practices for physicians seeking to re-enter practice after extended absence.
