Former ëcomfort womaní to speak at Vanderbilt University

Nashville, Tenn. ó Yoon-Shin Kim, a Korean "comfort woman" during World War II, will speak at Vanderbilt University Nov. 12 at 3:45 p.m. in Sarratt Cinema.

Kim was among the approximately 200,000 young women from Korea, China, the Philippines, Guam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia forced into sexual slavery by Japanís armed forces during World War II. Lured by the promise of jobs or kidnapped by the Japanese military, these comfort women were subjected to repeated rape and beatings for resisting involuntary intercourse.

Surviving comfort women have suffered permanent injury from disease, psychological trauma or social ostracism. However, none has received official redress. Kim will speak about her experiences as a comfort woman and her efforts to obtain reparations. She will bring to her lecture a unique perspective regarding interethnic Asian colonialism, imperialism and oppression.

Kimís lecture, sponsored by Vanderbiltís Asian-American Student Association, is free and open to the public.
