Newswise — DALLAS – The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) will celebrate its centennial at its 2012 Annual Meeting in Fort Worth, TX on April 26-28. Titled "Forward to the Future: Building on 100 Years of Progress in Medical Regulation," the meeting will feature a colorful centennial celebration as part of its opening ceremonies.

"We're honored to welcome leaders from national and international health care organizations to help recognize the significant role the FSMB and its partner state medical boards have played in helping shape the U.S. health care system over the last 100 years," said FSMB President and CEO Humayun Chaudhry, DO.

Keynote speakers at the Annual Meeting will include:• Regina Benjamin, MD, MBA, Surgeon General of the United States and a past Chair of the FSMB, will give welcoming remarks. • Aneesh Chopra, MPP, who served as the nation's first Chief Technology Officer, will speak on the future of health information technology and its impact on medical regulation. • Shantanu Agrawal, MD, medical director for the Center for Program Integrity, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, will discuss education and engagement efforts to fight fraud.• Gil Kerlikowske, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, will give the Dr. Herbert M. Platter lecture on a national approach to preventing prescription drug abuse.• Evelyn Baram-Clothier, PhG, JD, executive director of the American Medical Foundation for Peer Review and Education, will give the Dr. Bryant L. Galusha Lecture on the benefits of telementoring on post-graduate physician education, patient outcomes and patient safety.

The FSMB Annual Meeting is designed for members and staff of state medical boards, as well as individuals interested in medical licensing, regulation and discipline. This year's three-day program offers a special update on medical education as well as special sessions on the growing use of social media in health care, updates on opioid prescribing, new policies on physician reentry to practice and news on maintenance of licensure initiatives. The meeting is also the occasion for the FSMB House of Delegates to vote on important policy proposals, election of FSMB officers for 2012-2013 and investiture of the new FSMB Chair and newly elected officers.
