Promoting quality assurance in the application of manufacturing standards, ASME International (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) this year will continue the Program for Certification of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professionals (GDTP).

Design engineers, drafters and other professionals wishing to demonstrate their understanding of ASME Y14.5M - Dimensioning and Tolerancing and implementation of the standardís important principles will be required to successfully complete written examinations held on two dates in 12 different U.S. cities.

On May 16, examinations will be given in six locations:
Atlanta, Ga.
Cleveland, Ohio
Dallas, Texas
Grand Rapids, Mich.
Minneapolis, Minn.
San Jose, Calif.

Examinations will also be administered on Nov. 14, 1998. For complete information,

Y14.5M -- Dimensioning and Tolerancing, ASMEís most popular standard, in essence contains the language of design engineering. The standard provides definitions, guidelines and instruction pertaining to the numerous geometric characteristics essential for drafting and designing products and systems.

Y14.5M -- Dimensioning and Tolerancing is referenced in design and manufacturing environments including automotive design and assembly.

Certification provides a means for distinguishing the qualifications and breadth of knowledge of the engineer. In the case of the Program for the Certification of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professionals, a manufacturer or government agency could elect to buy machine parts only from suppliers whose design engineers carry GDTP certification.

ASME has implemented certification programs for operators of resource recovery facilities and medical and hazardous waste incinerators. The Societyís codes and standards are recognized internationally.

ASME, with 125,000 members around the world, is focused on technical, educational and research issues. It conducts one of the worldís largest technical publishing operations, holds some 30 technical conferences and 200 professional development courses each year and sets many industrial and manufacturing standards.
