Newswise — SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 24, 2011) – The Second Annual Georgia Tech Savannah VEX Robotics Qualifier is March 26, 2011 at H.V. Jenkins High School in Savannah, Ga. The event will be comprised of 28 teams from 13 schools, totaling more than 100 middle school and high school students, from around the State of Georgia. Georgia Tech Savannah holds this competition to qualify teams for the international competition while giving students the opportunity to showcase their practical robotics designs, which they have been working on throughout the school year.
Teams will compete head-to-head in both autonomous and driver-controlled situations to overcome real-world engineering scenarios. This year’s challenge is called Round-Up. It involves picking-up plastics rings, placing rings on goal posts and securing goals in order to prevent the other team from scoring. Each team will compete in one practice match and five qualifying matches. Four teams will advance to compete in the VEX Robotics World Championship, held on April 14,2011 in Kissimmee, Fla.
“It’s more than just a competition,” says Julie Sonnenberg-Klein, education outreach manager for Georgia Tech Savannah. “Students build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while problem-solving like scientists and engineers.” Admission is free and open to the public.
