GI EXPERTS ADVANCE DIALOGUE ON GENDER-BASED MEDICINE

NIH Pioneer Florence Haseltine to Participate in Scientific Discussion on the Implications of Gender Differences in Disease Management, Research and Pharmacology

WHO: American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) is an association of over 6,000 gastrointestinal professionals committed to the scientific study and medical treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.

WHAT: In 1985, gynecologist Florence Haseltine, Ph.D., MD joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and discovered that women were being excluded from government-funded clinical trials. She decided to remedy this problem, and with psychiatrist Susan Blumenthal, MD, cofounded the Society for the Advancement of Women's Health Research. Haseltine is heading an expert panel put together by ACG to discuss gender-based science and its relevance for research and clinical practice. Topics that will be discussed include:

-- Genetic imprinting and its impact on the clinician and patient
-- Impact of gender difference on drug development
-- New information on GI diseases predominantly affecting women, including gallbladder disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
