Newswise — The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) has announced the election of four new members to its Board of Directors. Hailing from universities in the United States and Canada and from U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories, these materials science and engineering professionals will help to determine the future course of the society and its activities. Each one will serve for three years on the TMS Board of Directors.

George T. (Rusty) Gray IIIVice PresidentRusty Gray is laboratory fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and a member of the National Materials Advisory Board of the U.S. National Academies. During his time at Los Alamos, Gray has served as team leader of the Dynamic Materials Properties section, where he promoted dynamic structure/property research on materials within the U.S. Department of Energy. Gray will serve as TMS vice president in 2009, as TMS president in 2010, and as TMS Past President in 2011.

Stanley HowardFinancial Planning OfficerStanley Howard is professor of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT). He is also the co-founder of Group V Metals Inc., which licensed technology used to produce high-purity tantalum and niobium compounds. Howard received the Mineral Industry Educator Award in 2004 from the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers and is advisor to the SDSMT Material Advantage student chapter. Howard will guide the professional activities of TMS concerned with finances, audit, and investments.

Ellen CerretaMembership and Student Development DirectorEllen Cerreta is a technical staff member within the Structure/Property Relations Group of the Materials Science Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Her most recent work has focused on dynamic damage due to shock loading and shear deformation of metals. In the past, she served as chair of the TMS Young Leaders Committee, which offers professional development opportunities for early-career materials scientists and engineers. Cerreta will guide the development of short- and long-term plans for activities related to TMS professional members and student members.

Hani HeneinProgramming DirectorHani Henein is a professor at the University of Alberta and director of the Advanced Materials and Processing Laboratory there. Henein has received the prestigious Killam Research Fellowship and is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). He will guide the development of long- and short-term plans for programming at TMS technical conferences.

The new directors will take office at the TMS 2009 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, February 15"19.

TMS is the professional organization encompassing the entire range of materials science and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its 9,500 professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators, and administrators from six continents. The mission of TMS is to promote the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals, and materials.
