Newswise — WASHINGTON (Oct. 25, 2012) - The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences’ (SMHS) Doctoral Physical Therapy program and Physician Assistant program will be hosting a health and wellness expo for persons living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ages 16 and up). Caregivers are encouraged to attend, as well.

Limited access to quality health care services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities compromises their overall health status. Research indicates that as life expectancy continues to increase for this population group, health and wellness activities are of critical importance to prevent increased levels of dependence and disability. To address this need, SMHS Physical Therapy and Physician Assistant students and faculty members will provide attendees with valuable information on nutrition, balance/falls prevention, flexibility, strength, endurance, medications, dental health, heart health, and sexual health and hygiene.

Laura Nuss, Director of the DC Department on Disability Services will provide opening remarks.

WHO: DC Metro Area residents who are living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (Ages 16 and up) and their caregivers.

WHEN:Saturday, October 27th from 11am to 3pm
