How to Fly Old Glory

Displaying the American flag during times of national crisis and on holidays is a common practice in the United States, and knowing how to display the flag correctly is most important. "If you are hanging the flag from a building, it should be hung with the star end attached to the building," says Sgt. 1st Class Alexie Velazquez of the UAB Army ROTC. "Looking down at it while you're hanging it, the stars should be on your right, which means from the ground you would see them on your left." Also, when flying the flag half-staff, it should be raised all the way to the top of the pole and then brought back down and centered halfway on the pole. The Stars and Stripes should never be allowed to touch the ground.
