How to Get Ahead in a Slow Economy

A person who wants to better their career when their employer isn't growing and no one else is hiring in their field can still take steps to get ahead, says UAB management professor Barbara Wech, Ph.D. "Remember the employer may offer movement possibilities when times get better, and if not, when the economy improves, there will be opportunities to move to a new company." In the meantime, Wech says, an employee should try to gain more skills and experiences in their current firm. While it may not pay off in the near-term, as financial times improve for the employer, efforts and commitment to the organization may be remembered in movement opportunities. "If not, these new skills and experiences you have gained will pay off in the market place as you look for opportunities elsewhere."
