How To Pick A Child's Day Camp

Summer day camps can be great places for children to learn and have fun. But which camp is right for your child? Look for camps that offer a variety of activities, says Andy Watkins, who coordinates children's summer day camps for UAB's continuing education program. "Day camps used to offer only one activity all day, like soccer. But today more day camps offer a variety of activities. That keeps children from burning out. Ask about the camp counselors' qualifications and credentials. Do they know first aid? Are they qualified to teach computer camp? How many counselors are on staff per child?" Generally, a 7-1 child-to-counselor ratio is best but some sports programs, like swimming, require more counselors per child.
