Call for Submission of Case Reports in All Disciplines Related to Anesthesiology

Newswise — San Francisco, CA (November 15, 2012) – A new journal dedicated to sharing and discussion of informative clinical experiences is coming soon, with the launch of Anesthesia & Analgesia Case Reports, the newest publication of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS).

The new journal will report patient cases that highlight important teaching points or scientific observations in disciplines related to anesthesiology: perioperative medicine, critical care, and pain management. Anesthesia & Analgesia Case Reports (A&A Case Reports) will premier in the first half of 2013. Effective immediately, the journal Anesthesia & Analgesia will not accept new submissions of case reports for publication. Instead, all case reports submitted to Anesthesia & Analgesia will be reviewed for publication in A&A Case Reports.

The peer-reviewed journal will be under the editorial direction of Lawrence J. Saidman, MD, Emeritus Professor at Stanford University, with guidance from members of the Anesthesia & Analgesia Editorial Board. "Case Reports have always been an important source of clinical guidance and scientific insight," comments Dr. Saidman.

“There are situations that are so rare that the only available guidance is a handful of case reports. We are creating a new venue where case reports are encouraged and welcomed, while maintaining the rigorous peer-review standards of Anesthesia & Analgesia,” says Dr. Saidman. "Our new journal will draw on the broad clinical experience of the international anesthesia community, creating a forum for cases that teach us how to handle the real-world situations we encounter in daily clinical practice."

A&A Case Reports will publish accepted articles online rapidly and on a continuous schedule, with new articles posted as soon they are available. The A&A Case Reports website will be accessible in both desktop and mobile views to ensure readers are getting the best journal experience regardless of device. In addition, easily digestible issues of A&A Case Reports, compiling articles from the website, will be available on the iPad via the widely accessed Anesthesia & Analgesia app. (Download the app here.) IARS members will receive access to the new journal as a benefit of membership.

The editors plan a streamlined submission and tracking process, using the same familiar manuscript submission platform used by Anesthesia & Analgesia. To ensure the most timely and useful content, plans call for rapid but rigorous peer review and approval, typically within four weeks.

The editors have issued a call for submissions, and are now accepting manuscripts at www.editorialmanager.com/aa/. Steven L. Shafer, MD, Editor-in-Chief of Anesthesia & Analgesia, adds, “Anesthesia & Analgesia receives far more meritorious case reports than we can publish. For years I have suggested that authors seek other venues for interesting cases that we were not able to accept. Clinicians have been concerned that case reports can no longer compete against clinical and basic science research in our peer-reviewed literature. A&A Case Reports addresses this unmet need in the anesthesiology literature. A&A Case Reports will publish cases that present challenging clinical situations, illustrate translation of scientific advances into evidence-based care, and contribute to our ultimate professional goal: promoting the highest standards of excellence in care for every patient."
