Ignore Y2K Prophets of Doom

Many "doomsayers" who harbor dire warnings about Y2K calamity are people who exploit and make money from the business of anxiety, says Charles Ford, M.D., a professor of psychiatry at UAB.

"Somebody is trying to make a buck out of making you upset. Don't let them," Ford says. Also, "avoid people who 'catastrophize' - those who look for problems at every turn. The overall probability is that this night will pass like all other nights. Take reasonable precautions and refuse to allow yourself to be panicked." If you have kids, keep your own behavior in check. "If you don't act like it's a big deal, neither will they."
