Newswise — Christy K. Holland, PhD, will be honored with the Joseph H. Holmes Basic Science Pioneer Award during the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) 2013 Annual Convention at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York, New York, on April 7, 2013. This award honors an individual who has significantly contributed to the growth and development of medical ultrasound.

As a fellow of the AIUM, Dr Holland has long been active in committees and leadership positions. She was elected to the AIUM’s Board of Governors and to its Executive Committee, where she served as secretary. Her particular interest has focused on bioacoustics and bioeffects; a dedicated member of the Acoustical Society of America’s Biomedical Acoustics Committee, she cochaired the AIUM’s Mechanical Bioeffects Conference and was guest editor for the resulting publication, Mechanical Bioeffects From Diagnostic Ultrasound: AIUM Consensus Statements.

Dr Holland’s history of reviewing manuscripts for 9 peer-reviewed journals includes the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation. This is just one of the factors that led to her appointment as the editor-in-chief of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, the journal of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.

She is currently engaged in 8 separate research projects with topics ranging from “Ultrasound-Assisted Thrombolysis for Stroke Therapy” to “Targeted Liposomes for Acoustic Cardiovascular Imaging.” Dr Holland has served as principal investigator or coinvestigator on dozens of research grants from the NIH and other organizations. With more than 85 publications to her credit, Dr Holland is best known for her exceptional teaching abilities and the large number of students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical fellows whom she has advised. The AIUM is honored to present such an esteemed award to one who consistently contributes to the augmentation of diagnostic ultrasound.
