For Immediate Release: February 20, 2013

Newswise — DALLAS – The Journal of Medical Regulation, which is celebrating a century of continuous publication in 2013, announced today the launch of a new website to assist researchers and organizations interested in exploring medical regulation in both its modern and historical contexts.

Distributed by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), the Journal of Medical Regulation (JMR) is a quarterly, peer-reviewed publication that addresses a wide range of issues of interest to state medical boards and organizations and individuals interested in medical licensing and regulation. The new website (http://jmr.fsmb.org) features, free of charge, more than 50 years of archived articles from the JMR’s rich history.

“Medical regulation intersects with so many disciplines – including health care, state and federal government, and the legal community – that we anticipate state officials, academics, medical schools, attorneys and others with an interest in these areas will find the website an invaluable resource in their research endeavors,” said Susan Johnson, MD, Editor-in-Chief of the JMR.

A Century of Continuous Publication

First published in 1913 as the Quarterly of the Federation of State Boards of the United States, the publication was renamed in 1915 as the Monthly Bulletin when the FSMB adopted a monthly publication schedule; the name was later shortened to Federation Bulletin. In its early years, the publication was the primary conduit by which medical boards communicated cases of physician discipline to one another. This service helped prevent disciplined physicians from moving undetected to another state. In 1999 the publication was renamed Journal of Medical Licensure and Discipline, and in 2010 it was revised to the Journal of Medical Regulation.

An archive of articles dating to 1967 is available free of charge to researchers and individuals interested in medical regulation. Remaining volumes covering the years 1913-1966 will be added to the JMR archive in the near future.

New issues of the JMR are available by subscribing to the print version (for subscription information, please go to http://jmr.fsmb.org). The new website will include one featured article from each new issue of the JMR.
