Journalists invited to apply for University of Iowa fellowship
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- More than 30 million Americans are unable to speak or hear effectively. However, advances in medical treatments and technologies can help prevent, compensate for or even reverse the communication challenges these individuals face.
Health and medical journalists in print, broadcast and electronic media who want to learn about the latest on research and treatment from leading experts in speech, hearing, voice and language are invited to apply by Dec. 3 for participation in a two-day fellowship that will be held March 24-26, 2002 at the University of Iowa.
The UI Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology and the UI Department of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery, which are each consistently ranked among the top two programs in their fields, will sponsor the event. The UI is also home to the federally--funded Iowa Cochlear Implant Research Center and the Child Language Research Center.
The UI will provide meals, three nights' lodging and all necessary supplies. Journalists need only pay for transportation to Iowa City.
Topics offered as part of "Making Sense of Speech, Voice and Hearing" will include cochlear implants for children and adults, genetic testing and screening for hearing loss in newborns, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), treating voice and speech disorders, stuttering, computer simulation of the human voice, and more.
Opportunities to meet patients and laboratory visits, such as one to an anechoic chamber (where sound doesn't travel in the usual ways), also will be offered.
