July 16-Aug. 3, more than 30 teachers and scholars from the United States and England will gather in Birmingham for a course, "Birmingham's Civil Rights Movement," co-sponsored by UAB.

Participants will study the civil rights era, visit historic sites in Selma, Memphis and Montgomery and meet ordinary people who participated in the movement.

"I hope the students come away from the course realizing they've heard the stories of martyrs," says UAB Study Abroad coordinator Frank Romanowicz. "They're the stories about those who died because of who and what they were and those who gave blood, sweat and tears in the struggle."
