Newswise — The Security department at LifeBridge Health has become one of the first in the country and the first in Maryland to use Human Transporters, also known as Segways, as high-tech patrol devices in a health care environment. The Segways will be used primarily on the campuses of Sinai Hospital and Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, both LifeBridge Health facilities.

"The Segways will allow the security staff to cover three times the area an officer on foot could patrol," said Michael Parks, Security director at Sinai and Levindale. "The high visibility will act as a deterrent to unwanted activity and provide faster response to emergency situations on our campuses."

The hospital recently purchased four of the machines: one is equipped with all-terrain capability. All of the Segways are equipped with headlamps and taillights for nighttime use. In addition to using the high-tech machines to patrol the outside of the Sinai and Levindale campuses, the Security department will bring the Segways inside during evening and night shifts when there is less pedestrian traffic in the hallways.

The Segways, which are currently being used by security at BWI and several other airports around the country, can easily maneuver both inside and outside of buildings, on elevators, along sidewalks, on parking lots, or in garages. The uniquely designed and quiet, almost stealth-like machines are easily portable and can be used at any of the LifeBridge Health facilities.

LifeBridge Health is a regional health care organization that includes Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Northwest Hospital Center, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, Jewish Convalescent & Nursing Home, and related subsidiaries and affiliates.
