The annual Hackensack Meridian Southern Ocean Medical Center Foundation Virtual Signature Social, held on July 24, raised nearly $90,000 for the greatest needs at Hackensack Meridian Southern Ocean Medical Center. In lieu of the planned in-person celebration because of COVID-19, the foundation moved the event to a virtual format that was live streamed to raise funds for the medical center, helping it to enhance care for the community throughout the pandemic and beyond.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted accelerated approval for brexucabtagene autoleucel (TECARTUS™, formerly KTE-X19) as the first and only CAR T-cell therapy for patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) relapsed or refractory to prior treatments. Investigators from Hackensack Meridian John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC) at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey participated in the pivotal trial which the approval was based: the ZUMA-2 clinical trial, which assessed the safety and effectiveness of brexucabtagene autoleucel in patients with relapsed or refractory MCL who had received up to five prior regimens of treatment and had exhausted all other therapies. That transformative study showed that 93% of patients responded to treatment, with 67% achieving a complete response (no evidence of disease). The data were published in the April 2, 2020 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center is the only site in New Jersey and one of just 17 in the country participating in a multicenter international Phase II study of an innovative personalized cancer vaccine being evaluated in combination with pembrolizumab immunotherapy in patients with melanoma that has been surgically removed but has a high risk of coming back. The hope is that the vaccine can prime a patient's immune system to be more responsive to immunotherapy and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
