Using angiographic images and computer modeling and analysis, researchers in Japan have evaluated hemodynamic factors that may help identify sites where aneurysms are likelier to form.
Researchers found that minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for lumbar fusion was associated with significantly greater odds of patient satisfaction than open surgery 3 months postoperatively. MIS was associated with less disability and pain at 3 and 12 months postoperatively.
Researchers from four academic neurosurgical centers in Japan found that the parietooccipital fissure, which divides the temporal, occipital, and parietal lobes of the brain, acts as an obstacle that may result in less invasion of posterior medial temporal gliomas toward the occipital lobe.

Harvard researchers examined data on sports-related traumatic spine injuries (TSIs) to see if different sports activities tend to result in particular injuries. They found that accidents involving cycling are by far the most frequent cause of TSIs, followed by accidents due to skiing and snowboarding.
Researchers examined whether race (Black or White) influences outcomes and subjective experiences in young athletes who have sustained a sports-related concussion. Of primary interest were how long it takes for symptom resolution and return to school as well as changes in daily activities and sports behaviors.

Researchers used delayed near-infrared imaging with high-dose indocyanine green (called “second window ICG” or “SWIG”) in the identification of brain metastases during surgery. They found that SWIG can be used to predict the extent of gross-total resection and progression-free survival in these cases.

A randomized controlled trial of the X-Stop® interspinous distractor device and open laminectomy in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. Both procedures improved the patients’ quality of life; however, overall, laminectomy gave patients a better quality of life and was also more cost-effective.

Researchers from Tokyo tested a device that, when attached to everyday eyeglasses, displays fluoroscopic images used for surgical guidance directly to the surgeon. The device allowed the surgeon to focus on operative tasks more efficiently and resulted in a slightly shorter length of surgery and less exposure to radiation than use of a fluoroscopic monitor in the OR.
