The American Thyroid Association has awarded a 2017 Research Grant to Jason E. Coleman, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Coleman’s project, “Effects of Early Hypo- and Hyperthyroidism on Long-Term Cortical Circuit Plasticity,” will study the effects of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism during pregnancy and the long-term consequences on brain function and behavior in offspring.

(ThyCa), to Vicki Emma Smith, PhD, Lecturer in Molecular Endocrinology at the University of Birmingham, UK. Dr. Smith’s project, “A New Molecular Switch in Thyroid Cancer,” undertakes to improve our understanding of thyroid tumors and to consider PBF phosphorylation as a potential new drug target for the treatment of thyroid cancer.

Dr. Shirley’s project is entitled “Impact of BRAF-Mutated Papillary Thyroid Cancers on Cancer-Associated Fibroblast Genotype and Phenotype.”
The American Thyroid Association has awarded a 2017 Research Grant to Marco Medici, MD, PhD, MSc, a clinical fellow in endocrinology at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In his project, “Personalized Management of Thyroid Disease,” Dr. Medici will create a prediction model to estimate an individual patient’s TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) setpoint, which should ultimately lead to personalized care for both hyper- and hypothyroid-diseased patients.

Danysh, PhD, Instructor in Endocrine Neoplasia and Hormonal Disorders at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Danysh’s project is entitled “Novel Alternative Pathways and Mutational Hotspots in Papillary Thyroid Cancer With Acquired Resistance to BRAF Inhibitors.”

(ThyCa), to Jens Lohr, MD, PhD, who is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Medical Oncology Department at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. Dr. Lohr’s project, entitled “Characterization of treatment response in thyroid cancer by cfDNA,” will explore whether “liquid biopsy” from a vial of blood can be an effective tool to gain insight into the tumor biology of thyroid cancer and, ultimately, will translate these findings into new targeted therapies.

Irene Min, M.D. is the recipient of the ATA's 2016 Bite Me Cancer Grant. Dr. Min, Assistant Research Professor, Department of Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, NY, submitted the winning project entitled "Application of Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-T Cell Therapy in Aggressive Thyroid Cancer."

Nikita Pozdeyev, M.D., Ph.D., Instructor, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Diabetes, Department of Medicine, University of Colorado, Aurora, has been awarded a 2016 research grant for his project entitled "Rational Combination Therapies with Lenvatinib for Advanced Thyroid Cancer."
A 2016 Research Grant has been presented to Liora Katz, Ph.D., Instructor at the Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism Institute, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY. Dr. Katz's project, "T3 and Glucose Signaling in Pancreatic ß-cells," will examine how glucose and thyroid hormone (T3) can work together to regulate the number of insulin-producing ß-cells in the pancreas.
Viswanath Gunda, Ph.D., is the recipient of a 2016 American Thyroid Association (ATA) ThyCa Research Grant for his project entitled "Combining Immune Checkpoints Inhibitors with BRAF Targeted Therapy in Thyroid Cancer." Dr. Gunda is an Instructor in Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA.

The goal of this prospective study is to determine whether changes in the levels of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSC) in the peripheral blood of patients with thyroid cancer before and after therapy can serve as a predictive biomarker for response to treatment.

The American Thyroid Association (ATA) is pleased to announce that grants have been awarded to support projects proposed by leading young researchers. Three of these projects involve the genetic analysis of thyroid tumors carrying the BRAFV600E mutation, which is associated with the development of some forms of thyroid cancer and increased risk for distant metastases, more advanced disease, and higher mortality. These studies aim to identify molecular markers that help clinicians assess patient risk and tailor treatments to improve patient outcomes and minimize side effects.
