New Penn Nursing Study Investigates Link Between Bedside Nursing and Avoidable Readmissions for Older Black Patients

As many as a quarter of all older adults discharged from an acute hospitalization will return within thirty days. Readmissions like these result in increased healthcare costs, functional decline and greater need for skilled nursing when transitioning back to community settings. Older black patients bear a disproportionate risk of readmissions according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and no single approach has been repeatedly effective in reducing readmissions for older black patients.

National Institutes of Health Awards $9 Million Grant for Study on Health Disparities in HIV Prevention

$9 million NIH grant will be used to adapt and test a HIV prevention intervention for adolescent men who have sex with men. The intervention, referred to as iCON ("I Connect"), addresses the growing disparity in new HIV cases among young men by offering life skills training and community-based HIV prevention resources through an online app.

Yet little is known about how such practices affect quality of care and patient satisfaction. A novel study published by the prominent research and policy journal BMJ Open concluded that the employment of nurses trained abroad to substitute for professional nurses educated at home is not without risks to quality of care.

Device-Assisted Feeding & Poor Growth in Newborns with Congenital Heart Disease May Lead to Poor Neurodevelopment

Newborns with a congenital heart defect often need advanced medical care to survive, leaving them vulnerable to cognitive delays. Various factors contribute to these delays. But what role does proper growth and feeding mode at the beginning of life play? A research team – led Penn Nursing – found that newborns (up to three months) with poor growth and CHD, who required device-assisted feeding, were at an increased risk for neurodevelopmental delays at six and twelve months.

Lead Exposure Impacts Children’s Sleep

A new research study from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing (Penn Nursing) shows that lead exposure in early childhood are associated with increased risk for sleep problems and excessive daytime sleepiness in later childhood. This is the first longitudinal, population-based study that investigated early lead exposure to sleep problems. The findings are set for publication in the December issue of SLEEP.
