Newswise — Brain Bee champions from Italy, Australia, India, Canada, Grenada, Korea, New Zealand, and the United States will be in San Diego this week to test their knowledge of the human brain in the 12th International Brain Bee Championship.

Representing the United States is national champion Yvette Leung from Jericho High School in Brookville, N.Y.

The contest is conjunction with the annual convention of the American Psychological Association (APA). Media may attend the competition, while the best story opportunity may be in covering the trophy presentation to the winner will be on Saturday, Aug. 14, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Brain Bee competition will be in the Elizabeth Ballroom B, Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel. The eight finalists will be introduced during the opening ceremony of the APA on Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Convention Center.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter will be a special speaker at the APA Opening Session on Thursday. The Brain Bee students will sit in front to be introduced.

Each year, there are about 75 competitions worldwide. Winners compete in national championships. The national winners represent their countries in the International Championship, this year in San Diego. They are tested on their knowledge of the human brain including such topics as memory, sleep, vision, hearing, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, and addictions.

The purpose of the Brain Bee is to motivate young men and women to study the brain, and to inspire them to consider careers in the basic and clinical neurosciences.
