Newswise — Loyola University Medical Center and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital have earned top ratings in standards for nursing, according to a report released this week by nonprofit hospital watchdog The Leapfrog Group.

These standards are based on the National Quality Forum (NQF)-endorsed safe practices on nursing workforce. Loyola and Gottlieb fully met the standards in the areas of preventing medication errors, appropriately staffing its ICUs, taking steps to avoid harm to patients, managing serious errors and maternity care. Loyola also received a top rating in safety-focused scheduling and high-risk surgeries. Gottlieb excelled in preventing central-line blood stream infections, pressure ulcers and readmissions.

The safe practices require that all nursing staff services and leadership are able to provide adequate and safe care. To attain this standard, hospitals must either comply with the 21 Leapfrog nursing workforce safe practices or, alternatively, achieve Magnet Status® recognition from the American Nursing Credentials Center, which recognizes health care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Loyola University Medical Center and its outpatient facilities became redesignated as a Magnet organization in October 2014.

Every year, The Leapfrog Group asks every general hospital and free-standing pediatric hospital in the U.S. to voluntarily complete the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Leapfrog uses the survey data to publicly report on issues that affect healthcare purchasers and consumers. Measures included on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey are endorsed by the National Quality Forum and/or aligned with those of other significant data collection entities like CMS and the Joint Commission. Leapfrog’s National Nursing Workforce report is a result of this survey. It is intended to report on and improve healthcare quality.
