Newswise — Richard Bensel, Cornell professor of government, comments on longtime Indiana Senator Dick Lugar’s loss to Tea Party-backed Richard Mourdock.

He says: “Senator Lugar’s defeat in Indiana is in many ways also a defeat for Mitt Romney. Mourdock’s coalition was drawn from the same portions of the Republican base that supported Rick Santorum.

“These voters are not just alienated, they are in full rebellion. While they have put the Indiana Senate seat at risk, the more important implication is that Mourdock’s victory indicates that Romney would have great difficulty governing if he were elected president. Those Republicans in Congress who represent the party base would owe Romney nothing and, in fact, might even find it politically advantageous to oppose him.”
