Newswise — A panel of thyroid cancer experts will discuss the management of high and low risk thyroid cancers in a panel session held Friday, January 23, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. until noon in Americana 3, 2rd level, at the American Thyroid Association's National Thyroid Cancer Workshop II to be held January 23 " 24, 2009 at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida.

Moderated by David Cooper, M.D., professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the panel will discuss ATA Thyroid Nodule And Cancer Management Guidelines for high and low risk thyroid cancers, including staging and treatment modalities using case studies.

The discussion, featuring panel members Gerard M. Doherty, M.D., University of Michigan, Stephanie L. Lee, M.D., Ph.D, Boston University, and Furio Pacini, M.D., University of Siena, Italy, will focus on four patient case studies and treatment questions posed for each that will include: What is the appropriate radioiodine dose for low risk patients?; Should ablation be performed following withdrawal from thyroid hormone therapy?; What is the role of recombinant TSH in remnant ablation? What is the role of prophylactic central neck dissection in thyroid cancer surgery?
